GEOGRAPHY

Himachal Pradesh is dominated by mountains rising steeply from the plains of Punjab. Some of the tallest peaks are Leo Purgyal (6791 mts), Kinnaur Kailash (6050 mtrs) and Deo Tibba (6001 mtrs) near Manali. There are several distinct regions in Himachal pradesh isolated by high mountain passes like Rohtang La (3978 mts), Kunzum La (4551 mtrs), and Baralacha la (4950 mtrs) for the road to Leh. "La" is tibetan name for "Pass"

The Lahaul valley is formed by the northwesterly flowing Chandra River, becoming the Chenab in Kashmir. The Beas River drains the Kullu Valley and stretches from Manali to Mandi before pivoting west to Punjab. In the west of the state is the peaceful Kangra Valley and the wonderful Chamba Valley separated by the snow capped Dhauladhar Range. The Pir Panjal Range separtes the Chamba Valley from the remote Pattan Valley.
