Wild life in India Flora and Fauna in India is very diverse. India's total forest cover is about 63.75 million hectares. Tropical forests are found in the Andaman an Nicobar Islands, Western Ghats, and Greater Assam Region. Alpine, temperate and subtropical vegetation can be found in the Himalaya. Above the snowline Hardy little plants like Anemones edeweiss and gentian grow. Monsoon forests are also found with evergreen forests with cinnamon, chestnut, birch and plum. In harsh extremes of India's hot and various strains of Accacia - BABUL, and Khejra are found. Main wild life found in India are Elephants, Tigers, Cheetals, Monkeys, Snakes, Lizards, Lions, Leopards, wolves, hyenas, Peacocks, and thousands of other species. Wildlife sanctuaries have existed since ancient times in India and after independence many new parks were created to save the wildlife. In 1972 the wildlife Protection Act was introduced to stop the extinction of endangered species. In 1973 Project TIGER was launched to protect TIGERS in India. India is the country only to the home of LIONS and TIGERS. But all acorss India many species are facing a perilous future,. The tiger , India's National animal is also an endangerd species. With demand of tiger bones, skins , more are more tigers are poached and their population is decreasing. They are limited to some protected areas now. Same is the condition with one horned RHINOCEROS, which in Assam is poached in large quantites for its horns and skin. At Present, India has 88 National parks and 490 wildlife sanctuaries, which consititute about 4.5 % of the entire country. India has currently 12 biosphere reserves that aim to conserve the diversity of ecosystems and promote research into ecological conservation.
